What is expected of teenage employees?

When you’re looking at jobs for teens, you won’t have to look very hard to find employment. However, when you want to find good employment, it pays to know what is expected out of you from the average employer. Until you are ready to commit to a job and a schedule, you shouldn’t be filling applications anywhere.

Whether you are looking for weekend jobs for teenagers or summer teenage jobs, the expectations from employers are traditionally the same. Unfortunately, teenagers have gotten a bad reputation over the years for being short-lived employees (which could be true), so this is your opportunity to prove employers you are valuable to them and really learn how to give them what they are looking for.

Regardless of where you decide to work, you will have a schedule that you are expected to follow. It will likely be posted a week or two in advance and detail when your shift starts and when it is scheduled to end. Your employer is going to expect you to work all of those shifts, which means you need to be responsible by always keeping a copy of your schedule handy.

If there is something going on and you already know about it, make sure you ask for the time off in advance. If you just found out that you can’t make the shift due to a personal emergency, tell your boss so that he can make arrangements. You are expected to communicate these things to your employer. Don’t call out a few minutes before your shift is about to start because it demonstrates irresponsibility.

You are expected to be courteous on the job as well. The majority of youth jobs involve working with customers in some capacity. If you value your employment, you will understand the importance of being face to face with customers. Your employer is trusting you with interacting with the very people that keeps them in business.

When you are dealing with customers, you should treat them with respect. Smile, see if they need assistance with anything and invite them to come back. If you are in a position where you are dealing with irate customers, talk to your boss and see how he wants you to handle these kinds of situations. It’s better to ask for assistance than try and make an assumption of how you think it should be handled.

There are different expectations for you if you’re under-18. Most employers realize that you don’t have a lot of job experience. Therefore they are going to put you into a trainee position first so that you can learn how to handle the position. You are expected to learn the position as quick and complete as possible. Ask questions if you are unsure about anything.

Teenager jobs are plentiful, but if you want to avoid hopping from job to job, you need to come to terms with what employers are looking for. As soon as you are able to meet the expectations of your boss, you will be able to stay at a job longer and potentially move up the chain of command, which also comes with more responsibility and more money. Just because you’re a teenager doesn’t mean you’re not held to the same standards as older employees, so you need to know how to conduct yourself on the job and be a team player.
